After obtaining my CELTA in 2010, I began my TEFL career at Getting to Know English Centre. Working with various age groups and proficiency levels, I soon found that there was a unique challenge when it came to finding suitable training material. This sparked an interest in giving the Centre assistance in overhauling and updating their study guides with new and exciting theoretical and practical activities in which students could apply what they had learned, inside and outside of the classroom. Over the past years, I have had the opportunity to develop my skills in teaching and training effectively, creatively and inspiringly. Working with students of various ages as well as within the corporate training field, I have experienced a great deal; to always be encouraging, motivating and always finding joy when others succeed. This has assisted me in fulfilling a passion for education and training and working with people. Being able to design and write took me on my path towards corporate training, where I was given the opportunity to develop and train my material in a more formal setting, where my "students" were now career professionals, needing to be trained on the company systems, as well as soft skills and some business communication. My work at the Academy, and with the various SETAs as part of the Quality Control Team, has been essential in my understanding of the various SETA processes and how the “behind-the scenes” work is crucial during the stages of Programme Planning, Implementation, Assessing and Moderation. These are fundamental in assuring that all steps and processes regarding due diligence are required and followed in order to run a successful training programme. Over the last years I have had the opportunity to not only design and develop training material for the various SETA programmes that the Academy offers, but also to learn from the content, be able to research and fact check information and to use my personal training, facilitation and assessing experience to better design the layout and functionality of the material for use by others, focussing not only on the Learners who are using the material for knowledge, but also for the Facilitators, Assessors and Moderators, who use the material in order to provide the best support possible to the Learners. I am currently furthering my studies in education and training, with the specific focus on the National Diploma ‒ 50333 OD-ETDP (NQF Level 5) Occupationally Directed Education, Training & Development Practices part time. Yours sincerely, Odette Schoeman
